I ran out of pill pockets and tried some alternatives. First, I tried wrapping the pill with cheese. This wasn't so great. The cheese wasn't really pliable enough. Next time I tried wadding the pills up in bread. The bread was easy to mold around the pill, but it wasn't gooey enough. Skeletor chewed it instead of swallowing and the crafty jerk ended up spitting out the pill. Finally I tried cooking some oatmeal with less water than normal. I tossed it in the freezer for a while and when I pulled it out it was rather gooey indeed. To my amazement, it worked rather well. Whodathought the world's pickiest dog would be such a fan of plain oatmeal!?
That's skeletor for ya!

ReplyDeleteHave you tried marshmallows?
ReplyDeleteThey are quite PUPular!
Have you tried sticking the pill in a piece of hot dog or wrapping the pill in American cheese? American cheese is far more pliable than other cheese.
ReplyDeleteCheck Skelly's email please! :)
ReplyDeleteWe were going to suggest marshmallows but it looks like Khyra already did :) Mom uses mini-marshamallows to give Brutus his benadryl. She uses a scissors to snip halfway through the marshamallow, sticks the pill in and then squeezes it together. Brutus is none the wiser :)

Wow, thanks for the great suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI'll give them a try :)
I had a sickly kitty awhile ago that I had to give pills to. Ever try giving pills to a cat? Not a fun experience for either one of us!!!
ReplyDeleteThe vet gave me a syringe without the needle. I'd put the pill in where the needle would go, shove it in the cat's mouth (this was the most difficult part) and push down on the other end. The pill would sail right down kitty's throat. Might be something else to consider.
Awwww well done Skelly and Wesley!!! Oatmeal pillpockets! Wow!!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteTake care

As a matter of fact I have tried giving pills to my cat. He tore me to shreds and I had to ask somebody else to do the deed :)
